The highly prolific Tony “Q” and Zoey “A” serve up another helping of original, tasty home-cooked music. “DEMO-LISTEN DERBY” consists of fifteen fresh offerings that span the genres from jazz to blues to country, from bossa nova to Cajun – rich and diverse in theme and flavour.
Q&A wrote and recorded the entire album as just one of their song writing projects in 2021- which just goes to show that It takes more than a global pandemic to shut down this singer-songwriter duo. Originally conceived as a showcase to present these songs to other artists, the performances are too good and the songs too luscious to wait on the shelf. So here they are as originally conceived by Q&A for your enjoyment. Adams shines on vocals throughout, while Quarrington provides impeccable guitar stylings and lead/backup vocals in a unique style.
The “DEMO-LISTEN DERBY” promises “HIT AFTER HIT AFTER HIT” as depicted in the CD’s cover art (featuring two stock racing cars in a pile-up!)
The feature track is the upbeat opening “You Never Let Me Down” with Zoey on a perky vocal, backed by Tony’s Django-style guitar and swinging violin by guest Shelley Coopersmith. The album is rich and highly diverse. “Sweet Destruction”, a funky Nashville duet, depicts a relationship that you know is bad for you but is too sweet to pass up. “The Old House” is a gentle meditative ballad about a common recurring dream of revisiting one’s childhood home. The Cajun waltz, “Blue Bayou Lullaby” features Tony on lead vocal backed by Zoey and assorted percussion “implements” from the kitchen drawers and tool box… oh, and the iphone!
There is a ballad featuring a string trio, a humorous tribute to the late John Prine, and a song co-written by Tony and the late great Mose Scarlett.
This is a friendly and entertaining collection of music catering to almost any musical taste.
Bon appetit!
